Copperplate Calligraphy (right) and Modern Calligraphy (left) are two different scripts, but they use the same tool—the dip pen. The former flourished in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. It follows strict standards for letterforms, the proportions of Ascenders, X-heights, and Descenders, as well as the slant angle. It also requires clear contrast between thick and thin lines, giving the whole piece a highly structured and elegant look. The latter only requires distinct thick and thin lines. It emerged more recently, featuring a more casual style and highly personalized slant angles.
Since their standards differ in every aspect, I have designed different course content and hours for each. The lessons will be rich and fulfilling. After completing the course, students will develop essential observation ability for letterforms and lines, which helps them improve their calligraphy practice over time.
The beginner level for both scripts are perfectly suitable for beginners with zero experience. Just choose the one you love.
