Practising Western Calligraphy is so much like life

Recently two students have completed four courses here. In the final class, when everyone shared their takeaways, one said that after learning calligraphy for so long, the biggest insight is: no matter how our writing turns out, just keep going. Even if a practice session doesn’t look quite beautiful, we still continue. Persistence is the key.

I always share that as long as you love the script, use the right method and tools, and enjoy the process, you will get there. Don’t worry about progressing fast or slow, or whether a session looks “good” or “bad.” Just keep writing. With every stroke, you build muscle memory. Progress happens quietly, one day you’ll suddenly realise—you’ve reached the shore.

One step at a time, Every step counts! Life is the same. Nothing comes overnight. Whether you’re learning a new skill, moving to a new place, or adapting to a new job, all of these bring unfamiliarity, excitement, uncertainty, self-doubt, and nervous anticipation. Through these shifting emotions, we train ourselves and do our inner work. Keep moving forward—even if it’s just a little—and you’ll move from “This feels so hard; I don’t know if I can do it” to smiling and saying, “Wow, I actually did it. I’m so proud of myself.”

Writing is just like life: every piece of effort accumulates; nothing is wasted. Let’s encourage each other! Welcome to share your learning story!
