How to Choose Calligraphy Pen - Brush Pen
Share

Brush Pen is one of the most common and accessible tools for calligraphy. It’s easy to control, comes in a wide range of colors, and is highly portable—making it a fauvorite among many who practice Modern Calligraphy. I’ve been teaching calligraphy since 2017, and I have clear standard to choose pens for my beginner students :)
There are many options on the market, such as water brushes and various brands of brush pens, with large, medium, and small nibs. If you have no prior experience, I’d recommend holding off on water brushes for now, as they lack bounce and snap, making it harder to produce consistent thin lines. In the world of Western calligraphy, achieving clean, distinct thin and thick strokes is essential. A medium-nib brush pen, like the ZIG Fudebiyori or Zebra Mildliner, is a great starting point. It’s easier to control than a large-nib pen, yet still offers a noticeable contrast between thick and thin strokes, helping beginners clearly see if they’re applying the right amount of pressure. Small-nib brush pens such as Pentel Brush Sign Pen don’t show this big contrast, but once you've mastered the basics, they become a fantastic option.
The good news is—when you come to my in-person class, I’ll prepare the most suitable pens for you. Just come and enjoy the learning process. Picking the right tools is the first step to achieve the goal!
